GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs intermediate protective service work in fire suppression and emergency service duties; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Work may be performed under emergency conditions and may involve considerable hazard.
 
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling: verbal communication is required for conveying, detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly: hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels: visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Performing fire suppression activities; responding to emergency calls.
Assists with and presents fire prevention programs’
Assists with departmental training programs;
Responds to fire calls; operates fire apparatus and related equipment;
Performs Medical and Technical Rescue skills;
Assists with and provides basic life support and medical care as needed;
Provides extrication and basic rescue is needed;
Responds to hazardous materials incidents;
Performs preventative maintenance on fire hydrants;
Cleans and maintains fire station and equipment;
May be required to respond when off duty;
Performs back up duties of interdepartmental positions such as Fire Engineer;
Maintains reasonable and predictable attendance;
Performs related tasks as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire suppression, including elimination of dangerous conditions; thorough knowledge of the geography of the city; general knowledge of the principle practices of building construction and electrical and mechanical systems; ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear and concise written reports; ability to interpret and enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A combination of education and experience, with major course work in fire science and experience in fire suppression.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina; NC Firefighter I Certification; Basic EMT Certification.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Residence requirements for the police and fire departments shall be determined by the city manager.  Reasonable response time shall be taken into consideration.
