Hiring Rate:
  $11.99 per hour

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a vehicle in the collection of solid waste and trash; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.  

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, and atmospheric conditions.   The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Driving sanitation truck; ensuring proper completion of assigned work and adequate safety precautions; providing proper equipment maintenance.
Operates collection truck picking up refuse and yard waste on a prescribed route;
Operates hydraulic mechanisms for lifting containers and compressing and dumping solid waste;
Drives truck and operates chipper machine; chips piles of brush and limbs;
Drives cardboard recycling truck; collects recyclables; sorts recyclables and places in proper bin;
Transports load to prescribed disposal areas;
Cleans truck and equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment;
Ensures safety of personnel assigned to truck;
Performs the duties of a Sanitation Worker as required;
Keeps up with daily and weekly reports/records to be turned in to Supervisor;
Advises residents of policies either by talking with them or providing information in the form of door hangers;
Maintains reasonable and predictable attendance;
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; skill in the operation of automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment; dependability.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to completion of high school/G.E.D. and considerable experience in performance of heavy manual work and in the operation of heavy equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of Class B CDL license valid in the State of North Carolina. Interested applicants must complete an on-line City application for the position.
