Rate: $10.03 per hour

Performs responsible skilled work in the supervision and maintenance of the city pool, enforcing rules, performing rescues if needed and instructing swimming classes.  Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, walk, sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Performs routine public contact and safety serving as a pool lifeguard and in teaching swimming lessons.
Tests program participants for swimming skill levels; passes participants for participation in more advanced classes or certifies ability to swim in deep end of pool and use of pool slide.
Supervises the activity of pool patrons/participants of all ages, maintaining safety, and enforcing rules.
Performs rescues and first aid techniques in accordance with proper training when needed.
Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, running errands, pick up supplies needed for activities, conducting classes, selling tickets and concessions, collecting fees, helping set up for classes, events, etc.
Maintains related records and statistics for various aquatics programs.
Assists in the maintenance of the swimming pool; Monitors and maintains pool filtration system. Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples.  Adjusts chemistry as needed to maintain standards.
Cleans bathrooms, facilities, shelter, office and pool.
Performs duties as needed related to opening and closing of pool facilities.
Maintains reasonable and predictable attendance;
Performs related tasks as required.
Working knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive aquatic program; Skill in operation of various hand tools used in the maintenance of swimming pool equipment, pool testing equipment, and phone; skill in First Aid and CPR; ability to effectively teach swimming lessons; ability to effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to an aquatics program; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors and the general public; ability to communicate effectively orally; ability to give and understand oral instructions.
Any combination of education and experience and 16 years of age.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the state of North Carolina, Possession of first aid and CPR required.  Must possess current certification in American Red Cross Life Guard Training or an equivalent course. AED certification and possession of WaterSafety Instructor, Water Safety Aide, and Basic Swimming Instructor are preferred.
